Cala Tramariglio (tramariglio Bay) 

In north-western Sardinia, in the province of Sassari, raises the wonderful bay of Porto Conte, 6 km deep and 2 km wide, enclosed by the two promontories of Punta Giglio and Capo Caccia. The whole area is part of the Regional Natural Park of Porto Conte, a natural protected reserve of about 5,300 hectares situated in the municipality of Alghero.

The park is named after the natural cove of Porto Conte which, in its turn, is part of the Riviera del Corallo and overlooks the anchorage of Alghero, about 20 km away. The conformation of the gulf is varied, with coves, precipices, white-sand beaches and cliffs.

In the east side, there are some marinas, including that of Cala Tramariglio where, until 1961, there was a penal colony whose prisoners were involved in the recovery of the marshy insalubrious territories of this part of Sardinia.

Today, the hinterland hosts a research centre and the tower of Tramariglio, built by the Spanish in the Middle Age to protect coasts from Saracen and pirate incursions. On the opposite side of the bay, a twin tower was built for the same purpose. From the top of these promontories, the visitor can admire a wonderful panorama.

The marina of Cala Tramariglio raises on the eastern shore of the gulf and is managed by Capo Caccia Yachting Club. It includes some piers (90, 80 and 65 mt long) reserved for the members of the yachting club, and some berths for transiting boats. In the event that no boat slips are available, the whole bay offers many anchoring posts and private marinas where to moor.

Near the yachting club a diving center offers the opportunity to enjoy underwater excursions since these sea bottoms are actually rich of wonderful natural grottos and coves, generally very appreciated by tourists. Grottos are situated along the whole coastline and the most popular ones are those of Neptune, about 24 km away from Alghero, south of Capo Caccia.

Both the grottos and the north-eastern side of the Sardinian coaslinet are accessible only in good weather and sea conditions since, in case of strong wind, it is impossible to sail or go out of the numerous bays and anchorages of the riviera.
