Description

The port of Carloforte is situated on the eastern part of San Pietro Island, well-sheltered from western winds. The small port is protected by a northern dock and San Vittorio's dock on the South. It consists of two cement docks reserved for commercial traffic and ferries and some floating jetties managed by different societies. The port offers 600 berths, 50 of which are specifically reserved for transiting boats up to 50 metres in length.

The port is well-sheltered from all winds even though strong sirocco, mistral and libeccio gusts can sometimes provoke undertow in the basin. The port offers a wide range of services, including a filling station, water and electric charging colums, a slipway, mobile cranes up to 70 tons, 70-ton travel lifts, covered boat storage areas, engine and hull repairs. In the surroundings, visitors can easily find supermarkets, grocery shops, hotels and restaurants.

In front of the port and in the San Pietro channel, sea bottoms range from 2.7 to 5 metres. Consequently, yachtsmen are required to use caution when approaching to the port. A 1.5-metre-deep shoal is situated east of the port mouth and is signaled by two buoys. Boats whose draft exceeds 2.5 metres are asked to follow the specific entrance channels marked by light signals and some buoys. At night, a yellow light at the edge of the shoal, a fixed red one and a flashing red light located at the top of two buoys are the main reference points.

San Pietro Island is situated about 10 km away from the coast. Together with Sant'Antioco Island and other neighbouring islets, it forms the so-called Sulcis Archipelago.

The island offers enchanting sandy beaches, such as those of Bobba and Guidi, and a series of rocky coves like Cala Fico. Carloforte is the only village of the island. The coloured facades of its buildings, its Baroque churches and narrow lanes make the town look like a typical Ligurian village. The culinary tradition of Carloforte is the material evidence of the history of this village and results from an interesting mixture of Ligurian and Arabian tastes.
